High Schools Cairns
The high school system in Cairns is part of Australia’s national curriculum framework. This ensures that Cairns’s high schools have a curriculum that has high standards that can be easily compared to other high schools across the country. The high schools provide subjects based on the national framework’s key subjects of English, arts, technology, health and physical education, science, social and environmental studies, mathematics and Languages Other Than English (L.O.T.E.). In addition to this, international students can be in an English as a second language program to help them in learn in the Australian curriculum.
The high school programs cover students aged between 12-17 years. Students in the 12-17 year range are place in grades 8-12 respectively. Students wear uniforms that identifies there school. School hours usually start from 8:45 in the morning to 3:15 in the afternoon. Arrangements can also be made for mature-aged students, those aged 18+ years. Schools that often cater for international students are Trinity Anglican School, Catholic Education Services and Education Queensland International.
The Trinity Anglican School has a strong relationship with the local community. Their international program is designed for students for various cultures. The program can include study tours, short stay as well as full enrolment. Trinity Anglican School is also a member of Round Square. Members of Round Square are located internationally. These members communicate and collaborate. This school has a major focus on physical education, legal studies, information technology/computer studies, sport, music, drama and fine art. The Catholic Education system operates three schools in the City of Cairns. St Augustine’s College is an all-boys school; St Monica’s College is a school for girls, and St Mary’s is a co-educational institution. Education Queensland International (E.Q.I.) caters for international students enrolled in schools provided by the Queensland State Government. All government schools in Cairns are co-educational. The Government schools in Cairns that are part of the international student program (I.S.P.) are Cairns State High School; Trinity Bay State High School, and Smithfield State High School.
