Working Visas in Australia
Studying in Australia? Excellent. Wanting to work while you’re here? No Problem, there are just a few guidelines that need to be met before you start applying for jobs. Once you have obtained a Student Visa for Australia, you are allowed to work in Australia while you’re here studying.
The Australia student visa allows you to work a maximum of 20 hours while you’re studying. This doesn’t include any work you may be required to complete as part of your study course. When you’re on study break, or holidays, you are able to work as many hours as you like. There are a few other rules that the Australian student visa has; one of them being that you may only start working once your course has commenced.
Also, If you are traveling to Australia with a family member, they are not allowed to start working until your course commences, and they’re only permitted to work 20 hours per week, at all times. However, if your family members have started a masters or doctorate course, they are able to work unlimited hours. Remember, before you start working in Australia you need to receive a Tax File Number, or TFN.
To apply for a Tax File Number you will need to contact the Australia Tax Office. The process of obtaining a Tax File Number is relatively straight forward, but is mandatory before your start working. If you need anymore information or if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your education provider or the Australia Department of Immigration and Citizenship. This can also be done through their respective websites.
